TIME: Meet at Church 5pm – Parents can pick teens back up at 6:15am on Saturday morning.

COST: $43 per person

DEADLINE: October 19th (Wednesday) All money MUST be paid by this date.

DETAILS: We start with a Senators Hockey game which is then followed by a Rally and Amp Time with some fabulous games on the ice rink and a ton of giveaways. At midnight we head out to 3 different stops. (We don’t know our order until that night.) Those 3 stops are: The Sports Dome, Bowling, and The BU Events center.

Helping Hands

The flooding may have damaged houses, roads, and so many things…but it did not damage the loving spirit in our church. Last night, instead of staying in our our little cozy building, the Sr. High teens and a whole bunch of adults hit the streets of our community to lend helping hands. It wasn’t as comfortable as sitting inside and then enjoying food at our last SNAC for the season, but it was worth every sore muscle and muddy spot on our clothes. So many people were so touched by our help and cheerful faces. So….

‘11-‘12 Selected Reading Book #4: Chasing Elephants by Brent Crowe

MY REVIEW:

Challenging. Convicting. Thought-provoking. Freeing. Beneficial. Implemental.

The intriguing title and cover are the first things to draw you into an intense, yet exhilarating probe of our freedom in Christ in the so-called gray areas of life. Brent has done a fabulous job at writing a book that sticks to the point, isn't full of big words and hard to grasp ideas, and stays true to the Word of God. In the first few chapters He presents the ground work of our freedom in Christ and in the last chapters he provides examples and "case studies" of what it all looks like fleshed out. In chapter five He presents sixteen questions as tools to aid you in establishing your freedom in Christ in gray areas.

Overall I really liked and appreciated this book. It's a comprehensive, yet simple and straight-forward book that the average person can both understand and enjoy. I was reading it in review before our teens in youth group begin to read it as part of this year's selected reading and while I think it's a great book, I do think it's possibly a little on the older side for some teens. However, that said, I still encourage them to at least try to read it as it does get easier as you go along. Brent has taken a hard issue and made it manageable - like eating an elephant one bite at a time! - and so I highly recommend teens and adults read this book and that parents work through it with their teenagers for maximum impact. It doesn't hold "all the answers" but it does give you food for thought that will help you think through gray issues using Scripture as your guide.

MY REVIEW:

Relevant. Straight-forward. Personal. Hands-on.

Ric Garland and Mike Calhoun join forces to give us a book that addresses 8 attributes of God - omniscience, immutability, faithfulness, sovereignty, love, wisdom, omnipresence, and mercy/justice - through the lens of hard questions like "Where was God when...?". Not only do they probe hard questions but do so in a teen-relevant approach that is easy to understand without being watered down and vague.

I appreciated this book for how relevant it is to the youth of today. Where Was God When...? doesn't just offer opinions but truth from the Word of God and hands-on application of how each attribute can and will change a person's life. I liked the straight-forward chapters that are short and filled with not just theory, but also with personal stories from the lives of the authors and others.

Not only will teens benefit from this book, but also adults looking how to answer the hard questions for teens or even for themselves. If you want to understand God's sovereignty, or faithfulness, or any of the other 6 attributes without reading a very long theology text, then this book is for you. I highly recommend this book to teens and adults both.

Inspiring. Challenging. Interesting. Practical. Helpful. Informative.

The Call is split into two sections - the first being about God's call on your life and the second is a series of interviews with well known Christians about God's call in their lives. It is a very practical "how-to" book as well as very encouraging, inspiring, and full of great advice. It is easy to read and easy to understand and digest. Each chapter can stand alone, but the book flow well with an overall theme of knowing God's call.

I appreciated this unique book and it's intent on helping the reader know and understand God's calling on their life. While I think it's geared for teens and young adults, it's a great read for any age and there is much wisdom to be gleaned at any stage of the journey. There is humor sprinkled around - especially in the interviews - that makes this book personable and real. The first half, which is more "hands-on", is very simple yet very thought-provoking as you apply it to your life. I really enjoyed the second half as it was a window into the lives of so many whom minister to us as they shared wisdom from following the call of God in their lives.

This book is perfect for the 16 to 21 age bracket, but definitely beneficial for younger teens and older adults as well. I highly recommend this book to all teens - especially those wanting to know what God's call is for their life.

The Gathering

DETAILS: The Gathering is where GARBC youth groups from across the state meet near Horseheads NY for a youth rally filled with some dynamic speakers, crazy games, cool prizes, picnic food, and a whole lot of fun and friends. It’s a great way to wrap up the summer and kick-off the new school year! We leave church at 9am and return around 4pm. The dress is casual – shorts/jeans and t-shirts.

DEADLINE: This Sunday, July 31st – we need a headcount to give to the organizers, so please let us know if you plan to come or hope to come.

Short. Funny. Serious. Interesting.

Jumping Through Fires is a refreshing look back at the life - thus far - of David Nasser. From a young boy in Iran to a young man in the USA he reflects on God's grace in his life in a humorous, yet thought-provoking, way. It's a light read both in pages and in presentation despite the sobering stories David shares.

I really enjoyed reading this book and it took me only 2.5 hours to go from cover to cover. At once I was caught up in the intensity of life for this boy at the young age of 9 and sat in awe as I turned the pages to unravel God's amazing plan of grace in David's life. Not only is this the inspiring recapturing of the life of an exile and former Muslim, but also the amazing testament to God's perfect plans and timing. David's sharing doesn't just challenge us - especially those growing up as the average American - but also explains to us how grace connects to the daily life of a child, teenager, and adult.

I highly recommend this book to all teenagers and adults. Due to some intense accounts of events taking place in Iran, I don't recommend it for children. However, it is appropriate for 7th grade and older. This book would be a great way to kick of the school year for any teenager.

A Girl’s List For “Mr. Right”

A few months ago we had lessons on what a godly husband and wife should look like. Mrs. Hoffman encouraged the girls to make a list – and check it more than twice! – of what you wanted in a husband. So for the fun of it, we thought we would share with you Mrs. Hoffman’s list from way back when…before she met her Prince Charming. We hope this will encourage you to make your own list and use it to filter the guys you are willing to date.

My Husband

Gentle:

Galatians 5:22 & 23 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.. Against such things there is no law.
Colossians 3:12 - Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
1 Timothy 6:11 - But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.

Forgiving:

Humble:

Luke 1:52 - He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.

A Husband:

1 Corinthians 7:4 - The wife's body does not belong to her alone but also to her husband. In the same way, the husband's body does not belong to him alone but also to his wife.

Understanding:

Proverbs 24:3 - By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established;

Teen Seminars

We have been talking about them in youth group, but this SUNDAY (March 6th) is the last day to sign up.

They are taking place on March 18th –19th.

The annual teen seminars are an overnight event where we begin by leaving church at 5pm (eat supper before hand) and drive up to Norwich for the opening rally, pizza party, and fun. Then we will come back to church and sleep before going up for part 2 on Saturday. Breakfast and lunch are provided up there. We will be back at church by 4pm – so parents plan to pick them up by 4 at the latest.

The cost is $22 and you need to pay Pastor Justin or Mrs. Hoffman by SUNDAY. You get a free t-shirt, too! You will also need to sign-up for the 3 workshops you want to attend. See the bulletin board for more details on those.

Adopt-A-Teen Sunday

On Sunday, October 17th we are having our 5th annual Adopt-A-Teen Service at 10:45 am.

We are asking as many teens be there as possible for this event. If you don’t normally attend our church we would invite you to join us for this one Sunday as we celebrate Christ and what He is doing in the lives of our teens.

Following the service there will be a spaghetti dinner on a love offering/donation basis for anyone who wishes to stay. All the teens are asked to please help both in the kitchen and by serving.

It’s at this time that we will invite the regular attendees of Central to “adopt” a teen in prayer for the year.

Nerf Wars!

On Friday, October 15th at 6:30pm we will take some time to set up for our Adopt-A-Teen service and dinner and then…let the nerf begin to fly!

It’s an all new game of fast fun for TGIC – Nerf War!

After we are done setting up and practicing for the Adopt-A-Teen Sunday we will pull out our special pvc tubes, hand out the nerf darts and have our own TGIC battle!

We will end at 9pm and the cost is $2 if you play. It’s free to watch for those who would rather cheer! =)

Giving Your Testimony – Christian Service Opportunity

It is important to be ready to share your testimony at any moment and we want to help you learn how to do that!

“But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.” – 1 Peter 3:15

Follow the steps below to prepare and share your own testimony of salvation.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Tell a group of people how you came to understand the need to ask Jesus to be your Savior and how you put your trust in Him.

WHY SHOULD I DO THIS?

When we live a Christ-honoring life, people want to know what makes us the way we are. We are commanded to share the reason for our hope. This process is telling others what Christ has done in us. It pleases God when we tell others what He has done for us. It is God’s plan to reach the world.

HOW DO I DO IT?

Write out your testimony by answering the following statements:

Before receiving Christ as my Savior I was…(In general terms, describe what your life was like before trusting Christ.)
I received Christ when…(briefly give the circumstances leading you to receive Christ as your Savior).
Since receiving Christ, my life has changed in the following ways…
One of the verses I base my salvation on is…

Practice reading your testimony so it will flow easily when you share it.
Pray for an opportunity to share your testimony.
Be courteous and neat when sharing before a group.
Show genuine interest in the people to whom you are speaking.
Be natural and talk normally.
Depending on the setting, ask for a response, expressing concern for the people to whom you are speaking.

APPLYING THIS FOR CREATIVE DISCIPLESHIP:

For the students who are actively participating in Creative Discipleship, sharing your testimony can count towards a Christian Service credit. Your Small Group Leader will 1 Christian Service credit (up to 6 times) for each new group of people to whom you speak sharing your testimony as listed above.

Please talk with your Small Group Leader (DIA Leader) with any questions or for their help in getting started with the process of sharing your testimony!

Preparing To Share The Gospel

This week’s topic and lesson in TGIC is about being prepared to share the Gospel with anyone and everyone.

One very easy way to be prepared is by having the the plan of Salvation marked out in your Bible.

Here is the path of verses that one of our leaders likes to use:

Romans 3:23
Romans 6:23
Romans 5:6-12
Romans 10:9-10
John 3:16
Ephesians 2:8-10

Want to make it really simple to lead someone through these verses?

Okay!

Then follow these steps:

Open your Bible up to inside the front cover. On the top right of the very fist page – which should be a blank opening page – write in red ink the first reference: Romans 3:23.
Now turn to Romans 3:23 and underline that verse in red ink. In the margin draw a red cross and write in the reference of the next verse – Romans 6:23.
Then turn to Romans 6:23 and underline this verse in red, draw a red cross in the margin along with the next reference – Romans 5:6-12.
Repeat this process over and over until you get to the last verse. When you turn to Ephesians 2:8-10, underline it in red, draw the red cross, and then write the word “END” in the margin so that at a glance you know that it’s the last verse in your little path.

The great thing about this tip is that it’s easy to remember one verse – Romans 3:23 – where you need to start as you show someone the Gospel.

Dates For The Core

If you are not already aware, we are going to be doing something new and exciting this year!

It’s call the TGIC Core!

You can read all about it by clicking right here.

In short, however, it’s a Bible study group that is open to anyone in 7th through 12th grade who wants to be serious about spiritual growth in their lives this year. We will meet twice a month at Pastor Justin’s home from 7pm to 8:30pm.

The only detail that we need to nail down is…the night.

As of right now we are scheduled to meet on the 1st & 3rd Mondays of each month. But so far the only ones who has expressed interest in attending have some conflict with this night of the week.

So this is where you come in…we need you to respond via e-mail, phone call, or COMMENT below to let us know if you want to come and if so whether Monday nights or Thursday nights or Tuesday nights would work best for you. It will still be only twice a month from 7pm to 8:30pm.
